Being a Game Master isn’t easy. There are a lot of responsibilities involved. You need to be very imaginative. Also, dedicate a lot of time to preparation. ➤ Maps, ➤ campaigns, ➤ characters, unpredictable events, and so on.
And sometimes, you just can’t make it to the game night. Other times, you can’t find a game master. There’s a lot that can ruin a gaming session.
An AI game master has many advantages. They have the potential to improve your gaming sessions.
First, it’s always available, so you don’t have to plan that much in advance. An AI game master is ready whenever you are. Second, it makes fair sessions. There’s no room for bias with AI, and we always appreciate a fair game.
It’s also very creative. AI can generate endless ideas. ➤ Plots, characters, settings, you name it. It’s like getting a tireless and creative ➤ assistant. But where do you find it?
Using GPT as an AI game master is easy. The key is to have a clear and detailed prompt. Here’s one of the prompts I’m using. You are free to use and edit it as you want.
Let me play an RPG adventure including character sheets, dice rolls, and everything that goes with it.
Create a random character for me and choose any campaign.
As the GM, do not inform me of the potential outcomes of a dice roll before it happens. Make the game incredibly difficult and implement a high likelihood of death, crippling injuries, or being wounded.
Roll dice on my behalf.
Number options with letters that must be chosen. Always mention that free-text responses are possible. Do not include the free-text possibility as a numbered option.
Include injuries as stat reductions and always describe the injury. Also, keep track of hit points. For example, climbing is tough with a broken arm. Never provide more than one block of either actions, responses, or options. Always use common sense. NEVER allow actions that do not make sense.
NEVER enable stupid actions. Instead, provide a suggestion for action.
Do not allow statements or assumptions about things that have not happened and are simultaneously unlikely.As you can see, it’s not hard. Of course, I’m using a very simple prompt here. I’m not only letting GPT be an AI game master. It can also randomize everything. From the ➤ game itself to the characters. And it does a great job. However, you can also set it all up yourself.
Think about the scene. Describe the setting in detail. Is it a haunted forest or a bustling city? Is it filled with characters and adventures? You can start like this: “Create a dark forest with towering, twisted trees and eerie sounds echoing through the air. Add hidden traps lying in wait for unsuspecting adventurers.” Next, define your characters. Specify who the players and their roles are. This helps the AI game master understand the game.
Next, plan the main quest. Also, add side missions. They really add depth to the storyline. For example, “The main quest is to find a lost relic of immense power. Along the way, players will encounter bandits to defeat, villagers in need of help, and mysterious ruins to explore.”
And add all the details you want. Come up with a lore. Or some cool ➤ NPCs. They are basically a must.
Is an AI Game Master better than a human? It’s a complex question. And there’s no definitive answer.
AI can definitely bring some advantages to the table. It can create vivid, detailed visuals of your world. Plus, endless unique characters. And so much more than that.
But it does it in a super short amount of time. This level of speed is really hard to match. Even for the most skilled human GM. Also, AI instantly adapts to your choices.
You get a seamless and dynamic storyline. And it flows without pauses or biases. Those can sometimes affect a human GM.
However, there’s always another side. Human GMs bring a special touch. They can do a lot of things an AI Game Master can’t. Like empathizing with players, reading the room, and responding with spontaneous creativity. Those make each session unique and personal.
They understand the emotions behind your decisions. So, AI can offer a rich, interactive environment with endless possibilities. But, it often lacks the warmth and spontaneity that is natural to humans.
Ultimately, the best experiences always come from blending both worlds.
