AI character: Prompting a perfect character

AI Is getting stronger and better by the day. Creating AI Characters is commonplace nowadays. Let's take a look at how to prompt your next character!

Fleshing out a character for your campaigns is super fun. Well, the actual game is the best part, of course. Character creation comes close, though. I mean, it’s your character. It represents you in some way. Now, AI is slowly becoming a part of our daily lives. It introduced the concept of an AI Character as well.

Let’s take a look at how you can prompt one.

First steps

Let’s say you have a good idea. Translating that spark into a personality can be challenging. Along with the backstory and character quirks. Maybe you’re a Dungeon Master. DMs need to breathe life into unique characters.

Or you just want a challenge. Playing the most random character possible is a good one. Whatever the case, AI characters have many uses. For me, the first question is always the same. Do I want to play a random AI character, or do I want to get specific about it? We recently ➤ prompted a GPT to be an AI Dungeon Master. There, we completely randomized the character creation. Everything was up to the GPT.

I do that for two reasons. First, because it’s challenging. And second, to test the GPT. So far, it’s been very successful. It generates a good AI Character. But more importantly, it remembers all the info. Also, it keeps track of hit points and things like that. That’s a must. Your campaign doesn’t make much sense without it.

But where do you prompt characters?

How to use OpenAI Playground

First, you’ll need a good tool.

  1. Go to ➤ OpenAI’s website and create an account. You can use your Google or Microsoft account to sign in.
  2. Choose a Model: On the Playground homepage, you’ll see a list of available models. These models vary in size and capabilities.
  3. Type in a Prompt. You’ll see a text box where you can enter your prompt.
  4. You will get a generated response now.
  5. If you’re satisfied with the generated text, you can save it (copy it to your clipboard). You can also share it directly from the Playground.

Prompting an AI Character

Now you know where to create your AI Character. Let’s move on. This is the prompt I use for character creation. You’re free to copy and edit the prompt as you wish.

Prompt

I want you to create a Dungeons and Dragons character for me. Be very detailed about the character.
You will choose everything about the character.
Race, Class & level, Background, Alignment, Personality traits, Ideals, Bonds, Flaws, Language proficiency, Skills, Features and traits, Spells, Backstory and Goals.
Describe the character’s appearance in no less than 100, and no more than 150 words.
Describe the character’s backstory and goals in no more than 200 words.
Roll 4d6 (dropping the lowest die) for each ability score and assign them.

GTPs are very imaginative.

ai character 2 Let’s say you want a bunch of NPCs. Just add that to the prompt. The GPT will generate them. After that, you decide what happens to them. That’s the next step, though. It’s a matter of ➤ prompting a campaign. But I wanted to experiment. I prompted the GPT to introduce a list of NPCs at various points throughout my campaigns. And it did.

You can choose to meet all sorts of characters. Some of them will be friendly, some will not. It all depends on your prompt.

This goes beyond DnD. You can create characters for anything. But more about that later.

Why an AI Character?

An AI Character is very useful for me.

I often have a vague character idea. Maybe a gruff dwarf barbarian with a love for animals. Or a tiefling bard with a gambling addiction.

You feed a GPT model a prompt outlining your vision. Next, it taps into a huge dataset of text. Finally, it crafts an AI character that’s coherent and engaging. AI will generate unique backstories. They explain your character’s motivations and flaws. Also, quirky personality traits that make them stand out. It’ll even suggest interesting names! That’s my favorite part.

This can be a massive time-saver. Especially for players who struggle with writer’s block. Or who simply don’t have time for an in-depth character creation.

But it’s not just about efficiency. It can also spark creativity. I often come across unexpected personality quirks or backstory details. I wouldn’t have thought of those in a hundred years. And you may actually end up with a more natural and well-rounded AI character. A character who might just surprise you throughout the campaign.

The Future Potential of AI Character Creation

Using AI to create characters is still a relatively new concept. However, it might take the RPG world by storm.

Nowadays, AI can have a back-and-forth conversation with you. You can refine your AI character concept until it’s perfect. This could revolutionize the process. Also, make it more engaging and accessible for new players.

We can create on-the-fly encounters and adventures. Also, generate monsters and traps based on your party’s actions. Just like in a traditional DnD session. And they are endlessly replayable. They don’t depend on a human DM’s imagination.

AI Character creation goes well beyond DnD, too. Countless game developers can profit from these. Creative writers, teachers, and so on. There are a lot of ways to use an AI Character prompt. And inspiration is never to be underestimated.

Venturing beyond GPTs

Everything we’ve said so far comes down to a GPT prompt. And truth be told, GPTs are good DMs. Not necessarily better than humans altogether. They do show some advantages, though.

ai character fableyHowever, there are a couple of things that can still be improved.

I’m talking about the immersion factor. There’s one thing I miss about an AI Character. It’s an actual image. A representation of the character. Pluxia really shines here.

It has advanced text-to-image and text-to-speech capabilities. That’s why Pluxia can immerse you in your DnD campaign so well. That’s what we’re trying to achieve, actually. It is a super-immersive experience that goes beyond plain text. You no longer need to rely on your imagination and reading only. Pluxia narrates the story for you. Plus. it generates images of every campaign step.

Hey, now you can really see your character fighting a dragon!

Conclusion

AI Character creation will only get better. Technology progresses quickly! Our AI tools will get more and more fantastic.

So, pretty soon, all our campaigns may become richer and deeper. Thanks to AI. And not just character-wise. So go on; let’s see what characters you can come up with!
